Retired Stearns Farm manager Kathy Huckins will share her deep knowledge of gardening with beginning gardeners in a hands on course at her Northboro gardens and greenhouse.
How to Grow a Garden runs from April through September, beginning April 21 and meeting on the third Sunday every month from 9:30 am-12:30 pm. The class will take students through everything they need to know to successfully plan, prepare, plant, tend, and harvest their own gardens.
Participants will learn garden siting; soil preparation; compost use; garden layout; seed and plant selection; watering and weeding; staking and mulching; insect and disease concerns; harvesting and putting by; fall growing and clean-up; and ergonomics and useful tools. Students will develop a respect for and ability to interpret the complex interactions between soil, plants, insects, and animals.
The course costs $360, with a 25% discount for Stearns Farm members. Enrollment is limited to 10 students. Registration ends April 14.
