For our third installment of this season’s Stearns Crew Spotlight series, I sat down under the crab apple tree to chat with one of the farm’s most dedicated and hard-working volunteers, Sal!

What brought you to Stearns and how long have you been a member?

I joined the farm as a work-for-share about fifteen years ago, back when Kathy (Huckins) was the manager. I missed gardening and was fortunate to have found Stearns.

What sort of work/tasks do you perform at the farm? What do you like about it?

Over the years, I’ve done all the tasks needed on the farm, from seeding to harvesting. Each season it brings me pleasure to see the process from beginning to end. Most of my time is spent in the fields, mowing (and keeping the mowers going!*) and most of all, making sure Ember is happy with the work.

What do you like to do for fun? Do you have any pets? A favorite hiking spot?

I enjoy taking walks in Ghiloni Park in Marlborough and watching my favorite soccer team, AC Milan, on TV. When I’m not working at Stearns, I volunteer at the Marlborough United Way twice a week.

I’m both a dog and cat person, but I am currently pet-free since my cat passed away.

What are you looking forward to most this season?

My purpose here is to see people happy. I love to see the crops doing well and I sometimes stop by the farm on pickup days to see if members are happy with their shares.

Before joining Stearns, I have never seen so many people work with so much passion and effort.

What is your favorite veggie from the Stearns share?

Simple eggplant, washed, cut, salted and sauteed. I also like baby zucchini, radish and beans.

*Editor’s Note: Sal has generously donated a much-needed push mower to Stearns Farm this season, ensuring clear rows and easier footpaths for everyone to enjoy. Thank you Sal!
